Today, Verizon finally launched the iPhone for its customers. With the announcement, we learned that it will be much different than AT&T’s version.

Namely, the vPhone is going to run on CDMA networks, and the aPhone is on a LTE network. Here are some reasons why CDMA will be good, and also why CDMA should, in theory, not be good.

Good Things About the CDMA version of the vPhone

Antenna problems fixed: the AT&T had some issues upon the launch of its iPhone 4 because of some faulty antenna design, in that it was touching in the inner metal rail of the phone, and holding it a certain way would cause loss of signal. Apparently the new vPhone addresses this with some structural changes (namely, there’s small gap inside the phone between the antenna and the casing.

Hotspot Capacity: AT&T doesn’t allow the phone to act as a hotspot, the vPhone does for up to 5 devices. This now makes the smart phone competitive, in that regard, with the Droid phones that allow wifi hotspotting.

CDMA Network: This, next to GSM’s 75%, makes up 12% of the market share, which is probably a bigger network than AT&Ts LTE. (I need a fact checker on this). Downside is that CDMA has a tendency to use up battery life. Hopefully it will not be problematic for the vPhone.

Downsides of the CDMA vPhone

Data / Voice: You can’t use data and voice at the same time on CDMA, and when asked, Tim Cook sidestepped a question about this. Lets hope its not so bad.

3G vs 4G: The vPhone, for now, isn’t a 4G phone.

Branding: The Verizon version of the iPad is already tatted up with the stupidly large Verizon logo, and it would be equally unimpressive if it were on the back of the vPhone. Let’s hope they keep their logos to themselves.

Delivery Date: Early Feb for current Verizon users, and about 5 days later for all new customers. We want it now.
